Torrential rains have already caused flooding in some areas. Flash floods are the number one weather-related killer in the United States, and most flood deaths happen because people try to drive through deadly waters rather than avoid them. Water’s powerful force can easily overtake vehicles caught in a flood. Actually, the average automobile can be swept off the road in just 12 inches of moving water.

The American Red Cross is opening a site to assist those affected by flash floods. The first location to open is in Bossier Parish at First Baptist Church of Haughton — 105 E. Washington Ave., Haughton LA 71037. The Red Cross is working with parish officials and partners regarding other sites.
Anyone evacuating should bring essential items for each member of the family:
- Prescriptions and emergency medications
- Foods that meet unusual dietary requirements
- Identification to show residence is in affected area and important personal documents
- Extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies and other comfort items
- Supplies needed for children and infants, such as diapers, formula and toys
- Special items for family members who are elderly or disabled
- Chargers for any electronic devices you bring with you
- Books, games and other ways to entertain your family and yourself
- Public health regulations do not permit pets in shelters; service animals are permitted.
STAY SAFE
With more severe weather forecasted through the week, the Red Cross encourages everyone to prepare.
- Stay away from flood waters. If you come upon a flowing stream where water is above your ankle, stop, turn around and go another way. If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
- Keep children and pets out of the water, as they are curious and can be harmed by flowing or contaminated water.
- Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.
