I (Mason) am still new to Louisiana. It’s been a few years since I moved here but two of those years were during COVID. So I’m still learning a thing or two about king cake. Since its king cake season I thought now that we can travel and move freely around Louisiana, I should find out more about king cake. And, it turns out there’s a whole bunch of different kinds of king cake out there!
The kind of king cake I am most accustomed to is considered “North Louisiana” king cake… this is the kind of king cake you get a Tubbs! Like Tubbs extreme king cakes… They say the secret to these is the extreme amount of filling! These king cake sure are delicious, but it looks like there’s a Lotta different king cakes, I need to try!
Have you heard of the twins burgers and sweet Boudin king cake?? This king cake is made up of savory dough with Boudin in the middle of it and then it’s drizzled with Steens syrup with Cracklin bits all over the top! Holy cow!
Then I found out about the Pouparts traditional French Gateau de Rois king cake! In Lafayette, you can get this French traditional king cake made of puff pastry filled with almond marzipan and topped with a paper crown!
In lake Charles, you can get a hotdog at Botsky’s with king cake, sweet potato fries!
And in New Orleans, you can drink your king cake! At the bourbon house, you can order a king cake Bevvy… it’s a blended drink with one cup vanilla ice cream 2 ounces of rum a half ounce of cinnamon syrup, half ounce of almond syrup quarter ounce of orange juice blended until it’s smooth with a swirl of cinnamon and purple green and gold sugar! Man, this is going to be a fun Mardi Gras season!
