Today is National Margarita Day! The margarita is a popular Mexican cocktail composed of tequila, orange liqueur and lime juice.
While many stories abound regarding the origins of this refreshing concoction, the most widely accepted legend dates it back to 1938. According to the story, it was created by Carlos “Danny” Herrera at his popular Tijuana restaurant, Rancho La Gloria.
Herrera had noticed an attractive woman sitting at the bar one day, and he wanted to make a special drink for her that would reflect her beauty. After experimenting with a few different spirits, he eventually combined tequila, triple sec and lime juice to make what he thought was the perfect combination.
He named it after the woman, Margarita Sames, who was staying at a nearby hotel. Since then, the margarita has become one of the most popular and well-known drinks in the world, with endless variations and flavors. Its legacy lives on today and will continue to do so for many years to come.
